Relieve hip pain without joint replacement

If you have chronic hip pain from a previous hip injury or condition, discomfort can affect your daily life. At Baylor Scott & White, you can receive expert hip preservation treatment from experienced specialists throughout North and Central Texas who understand the complex nature of hip function—and who are dedicated to helping adolescents and active adults enjoy the things they love most.

Hip preservation specialists develop personalized treatment plans by carefully examining muscles, ligaments, tendons, bones and blood vessels in the hip to determine the exact cause of your pain. Our surgeons perform a range of hip preservation surgery techniques, including hip decompression and hip cartilage transplantation, to relieve discomfort and minimize the need for hip replacement surgery down the road.

Our approach to hip preservation

Doctors use hip preservation to relieve hip pain, preserve hip function and slow or stop the progression of degenerative joint conditions, so you can maintain an active life and possibly avoid further joint issues later in life.

At Baylor Scott & White, you have access to a hip preservation program that offers the latest surgical techniques and personalized support from diagnosis through recovery and beyond.

  • State-of-the-art hip cartilage transplantation

Hip cartilage transplantation is a procedure to rebuild damaged cartilage in the hip joint. A newer procedure developed within the past decade, hip cartilage transplantation allows your surgeon to replace cartilage damaged by hip injuries, hip dysplasia, femoroacetabular impingement, labral tears, osteoarthritis and other conditions with your own or donor cartilage. Baylor Scott & White is one of only a few centers in the US that offer this advanced treatment.

Previous treatments to repair damaged hip cartilage provided short-term relief and didn’t always prevent long-term problems, such as arthritis, from developing. Hip cartilage transplantation offers the benefit of lasting relief while also helping you potentially avoid further joint damage and total hip replacement surgery.

  • Hip decompression: Spurring a natural healing process

Hip decompression helps many people with avascular necrosis (a condition in which bone tissue dies due to a lack of blood supply) avoid total hip replacement by taking advantage of the body’s natural ability to repair bone damage.

Avascular necrosis of the hip limits blood supply to the femur (thigh bone) where it meets the pelvic bone, causing bone tissue to die. Without treatment, this will not stop, and eventually, the top of the femur can fracture or collapse. If that happens, the only treatment option is hip replacement surgery.

During hip decompression, one or more holes are drilled in the head of the thigh bone, decreasing pressure in the bone, creating new areas for blood vessels to grow and improving blood flow. This type of regenerative medicine allows our orthopedic surgeons to restore and rebuild your natural hip—not replace it.

  • Accurate diagnostics, advanced care

At Baylor Scott & White, you will find a wide range of hip preservation treatment options.

You can see a hip preservation specialist to get a second opinion or gain a better understanding of what’s causing your hip pain. For example, you might need imaging and an in-depth exam to confirm that your pain stems from a back condition and not a hip problem. Our specialists will make an accurate diagnosis and discuss your treatment options or direct you to the appropriate specialist who can help.

Our experienced surgeons perform a variety of advanced surgical procedures, including hip decompression and hip cartilage transplantation.

  • A powerful network

When you see a provider at Baylor Scott & White, you have the advantage of the expertise of a comprehensive network of specialty care doctors. If your hip pain is related to another condition that requires separate care, your hip preservation specialist can connect you to the right person to get the care you need.

Our providers also work together to ensure your care plan is tailored to your personal needs. Our team will ensure a smooth path forward to help you get back to your active life.
